The fallout from the CrowdStrike outage continues. While major players are largely up and running again, there are still affected systems out there working on a full recovery. During this period, organizations are open to increased risks during their CrowdStrike recovery – including from phishing attacks.
CERT-In – the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team – is an office within the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India. Recently, they’ve released an advisory alert that they’re seeing increased phishing activity targeting CrowdStrike users affected by the outage.
By posing as a support team, malicious actors can take advantage of the current confusion and trick overworked and overstressed IT teams and departments into giving them information and access to systems they would otherwise not be able to breach.
Increased vigilance is needed
As always, the answer is alertness, training and being alert to the possibility of phishing. Organizations that invested into training (including regular retraining and refresher courses) will find that investment paying off.
In general, be cautious about any offer of customer support you did not yourselves initiate. Pay attention to presented credentials and how they can verify themselves. Do not click links in unsolicited emails or trust “patches” and “bugfix” procedures outlined on unofficial websites.
Invest into security
With an uptick in phishing, inevitably some attacks will get through. In these cases, it is no longer a matter of prevention but of having systems in place to mitigate the damage. In particular, this is going to mean being able to restore your old data pre-breach or access files while the recovery process and audit is ongoing.
