Data centers and continuity

Last week, we touched on the 3-2-1 Method and how it can benefit your data continuity in the face of possible hazards. With the floods ravaging Central Europe this week, it’s a good time to look past the software and towards the physical side – at data centers and continuity.

The 3-2-1 method, in quick recap, means that you have three copies of your data, in at least two different mediums, with at least one being physically located away from your main location and ideally also away from your region. The reason for the last injunction is not due to cybersecurity hazards, but more prosaic issues – acts of god, natural disasters, or infrastructural complications.

With the current floods, it is tempting to look at the most extreme of cases; something like the 2021 tornado in Czechia, which damaged a Cloud data center. This sort of direct interruption, with servers being physically damaged or taken offline, is the rarest and most impressive of cases. But a far more simple and commonplace issue is simply losing power.

As the Cloud continues to grow and companies continue to invest into this space, data centers are a growing proportion of the power draw for many regions. While key centers will generally have backup generators in place, they can still be taken offline for crucial hours or even days. This presents a complication for organizations whose critical data was stored entirely on the Cloud – and present entirely in that section.

Preserving data continuity

The core question of how to preserve your data continuity is entertaining a balance of risks. If you keep all of your data on-premises to avoid risks associated with data centers and the Cloud, you expose yourself to localized threats, having put all your eggs in one basket. By instead putting everything on the Cloud, you’re doing the same thing but handing the basket to someone else first.

With the 3-2-1 Method, the idea is to minimize the possibility that everything can go wrong at once and try to ensure that no matter what, at least one copy of your data will remain untouched.
