Dangers of outdated backup systems

As organizations continue to grapple with securing their data and regulations insist on instituting baseline security measures, outdated backup systems continue to represent a major vulnerability.

Object First recently released research revealing the impact of ransomware attacks on organizations’ data. According to the survey Object First conducted, research found that outdated backup technology (34%), lack of backup data encryption (31%), and failed data backups (28%) are the top vulnerabilities to attacks.

This is compounded by existing trends where attackers deliberately focus on the backup, trying to target it with ransomware to disable the target company’s easiest road to recovery. If successful, such a ransomware attack can be crippling and negate a significant part of your disaster recovery plan.

“Our research shows that almost half of organizations suffered attacks that targeted their backup data, highlighting the criticality of adopting backup storage solutions that are ransomware-proof,” said Andrew Wittman, Chief Marketing Officer at Object First.

What other issues were identified?

Key survey findings found that:

  • 84% of IT workers say they need better backup security to meet regulations and compliance obligations
  • 93% say their backup vendors need to focus more on security
  • 41% of IT workers say their people lack the skills to manage complex backup storage solutions
  • 69% say budget constraints on hiring security experts negatively impacted their security posture
  • 44% say it has taken one or more months to recover backup data

The way forward is to embrace significantly harsher security standards; the main one, which we have touched on previously, is a Zero Trust standard and immutable backup storage.

Establishing Backups using the 3-2-1 Rule is also a must-have, as it helps give your systems a layer of redundant protection by distributing the backup to different locations and mediums and making it difficult for an attacker to cut you off entirely.
