Backup Day 2025

Backup Day 2025, which fell on March 31st, has come and gone. Let’s look at some of the latest trends, both positive and negative, as well as some of the questions about future developments.

Backups reach new heights

As of this Backup Day, backups have managed to hit new heights in market penetration. India leads the way in daily data backups; 30% of Indian consumers back up data every day, followed by the US (27%) and the UK (23%). The current technology of choice continues to be external hard drives at 54%.

The 3-2-1 backup scheme continues to be recognized as the gold standard worldwide, with a setup like the following:

  • 3 copies of data
  • 2 different storage devices
  • 1 offsite copy stored (e.g., cloud computing)

However, 35% of worldwide users regard cloud storage as too costly, leading to a move toward hybrid solutions.

Challenges to the backup sphere

Unfortunately, the survey also reveals some concerning gaps. 19% of respondents who use backups revealed they only do so because they are legally obligated to. Furthermore, of those who use Cloud based solutions, 60% have run out of space in the past six months – something else that can cripple their security posture moving forward.

These are aspects that need to be addressed as the cybersecurity space becomes saturated with more complex threats enabled by AI technology, drastically increasing the number of threats faced as well as spearphishing success rates.

What can we do to improve backup reliability?

There are a few things that you can – indeed should – do to help your backups maintain reliability:

Verify backups regularly

Have a process in place for checking the integrity of your backups. It’s no good to have a backup in place if it turns out to be corrupt or incomplete!

Test your recovery process periodically

In a similar vein to the previous point, make sure the process works regularly; once an incident has occurred, it will be too late to discover any irregularities in its function.

Adhere to 3-2-1 schemes

Cleave as close as possible to the 3-2-1 backup scheme, ensuring redundancy in all parts of the process.
